Nous sommes à l'ère des pirates. Luffy, un garçon espiègle, rêve de devenir leur roi en trouvant le " One Piece ", un fabuleux trésor. Par mégarde, Luffy a avalé un jour un fruit démoniaque qui l'a transformé en homme-caoutchouc. Depuis, il est capable de se contorsionner grâce à son corps élastique, mais il a perdu la faculté de nager. Avec l'aide de ses précieux amis, il va devoir affronter de redoutables flibustiers dans des aventures toujours plus rocambolesques...

Monkey D. Ruffy ist schon seit frühester Kindheit vom Treiben am Hafen fasziniert. Der gefürchtete Pirat Shanks und seine Mannen sind überall bekannt und Ruffy bittet den Freibeuter immer wieder, ihn einmal mit auf abenteuerliche Fahrt zu nehmen, wird aber abgewiesen. Ruffys Leben ändert sich schlagartig, als er eine Gum-Gum-Frucht isst und dadurch die Fähigkeit erhält, seinen Körper (fast) beliebig dehnen zu können. Die Sache hat aber auch einen Haken: Er kann fortan nicht mehr schwimmen.

Nach einigen Jahren Training macht Ruffy sich mit eigener Mannschaft auf, den "One Piece", den Schatz aller Schätze, zu heben. Die von Eiichiro Oda erfundene und gezeichnete Serie begeistert in Japan Millionen von Lesern und kann wegen ihres abgedrehten Humors und der schrillen Charaktere als legitimer Nachfolger für DRAGON BALL angesehen werden.

Monkey D. Rufy è un giovane pirata sognatore che da piccolo ha inavvertitamente mangiato il frutto del diavolo Gom Gom  che lo rende "elastico", permettendogli di allungarsi e deformarsi a piacimento, a scapito, però, della capacità di nuotare. L'obiettivo che lo ha spinto in mare è quello ambizioso di diventare il "Re dei pirati". Dovrà, dunque, ritrovare il leggendario "One Piece", il magnifico tesoro lasciato dal mitico pirata Gol D. Roger probabilmente sull'isola di Raftel, alla fine della Rotta Maggiore, mai ritrovato e sogno di ogni pirata.
Nella sua avventura, Rufy riunirà intorno a lui una ciurma, e si troverà in mezzo a situazioni bizzarre e stravaganti, tanto almeno quanto lo sono i personaggi, amici o nemici, presenti nell'universo che lo circonda, che raggiungono spesso livelli assurdi e grotteschi e che donano all'opera un'atmosfera surreale e divertente.
